Highlands Ranch's History

Highlands Ranch was first settled by the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes, but it was later claimed as a French territory by Rene-Robert Cavelier. In 1763, the area came under Spanish country, only to have it go back to the French in 1801. Finally, Highlands Ranch was sold to the U.S. as a part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The area was first settled as ranch land in the 1870s and grew to become a suburb of Denver during the later 1900s.
