Denver's History
Denver was founded as a mining town in 1858 during the time of the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Prospectors from Lawrence, Kansas, settled the area first, with many others following. When General William Larimer arrived in the area, he named the settlement Denver City after Kansas Territorial Governor James Denver. Denver City was incorporated in 1861, and in 1865, it became the Territorial Capital. At the same time, the “City” was dropped from the name. Following Colorado’s admission to the Union in 1876, Denver was named the state capital
